Cutting from a newspaper in April 1884 highlighting the fund-raising efforts at the time.

Whilst the earthquake which occurred on 22nd April 1884 caused no fatalities and only minor injuries to people, a considerable amount of damage was caused to properties especially in the Peldon area and in Wivenhoe.  Various appeals were started which, by June 1884 had raised nearly £10,000 (source:  Butler – The Story of Wivenhoe)
