We aim to organise at least on public lecture each year as well as a varied programme of activities for members.
Meetings
The last meeting of 2014 was held on Wednesday 3rd December featuring Jimmy Lawrence. Jimmy is a well-known and great character who grew up on Thames Sailing Barges and later went into sail-making for boats such as these. He still speaks with a local Brightlingsea accent and has a turn of phrase which has a charm all of its own. Members thoroughly enjoyed listening to him tell stories about his life, mainly as a young boy playing along the foreshore here at Wivenhoe as well as in Brightlingsea. He also performed a couple of songs for us. The evening was greatly enjoyed helped by a glass of wine and a mince pie.
Wivenhoe Memories Exhibitions
John Stewart started staging an Exhibition of historic photographs and memorabilia many years ago and it has become a regular fixture in the Wivenhoe calendar, attracting many residents from Wivenhoe and much further afield.
The last Wivenhoe Memories Exhibition was in the Wm Loveless Hall on Saturday 23rd August / Monday 25th August 2014 from 10.00 am to 5pm each day. The next one is 4th – 6th April 2015.
Public Talks
The Wivenhoe History Group aim to arrange at least one public talk each year in St Mary’s Church, Wivenhoe.
The following talks have been held:
October 2014 – Dr Paul Rusiecki – WW1 – The Impact of Catastrophe on Wivenhoe and the People of Essex.
March 2014 – Talk by Paul Brown on Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea Railway.
October 2013 – Lecture by Christopher Thompson about the De Veres and Wivenhoe Hall.
