3868 Private George Alfred Bartlett Essex Regiment and later 40088 Private in the 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment was born 1892, son of George Thomas Bartlett (a fisherman) & Celia Cole, Brook Street. Apprenticed Oyster Fisherman.
He was sent to France July 1916. Having been previously wounded in the head and leg in August 1917, reported wounded in the abdomen possibly at the Battle for Hill 70 in August 1917.
He died in hospital in France of wounds on 12th September, 1917, aged 25. Interred Saturday, 15th September 1917 in Bethune Town Cemetery, Plot 6, Row G, Grave No 46.
He is named on yhe Wivenhoe’s War Memorial. Entitled to War and Victory Medals and the war gratuity.
