The Relief of Mafeking Celebrations

Another excuse for a parade

Lesley McCabe (Nottage)

The parade to celebrate the Relief of Mafeking prepares to start from the Falcon Yard, next to St Mary's Church. The portraits of Lord Roberts and Baden Powell can be seen on the banner.

The people of Wivenhoe supported the Boer War with enthusiasm and the relief of Mafeking was hailed with total enthusiasm.  Forrestt’s shipyard downed tools and the workers wandered round the town singing and drinking.  Cannons fired, church bells rang, flags were hoisted everywhere, ships were dressed in flags and in the evening a torchlight procession with a firework display took place.
