Petty Officer James Samuel Green
Born 1891 and tragically lost at sea in 1919
John Stewart
A Wivenhoe man, Petty officer James S. Green of H.M.S. King Edward VII was married to Miss Dora Wilson at Greenhithe. The bridegroom had the distinction of being the youngest petty officer in the British Navy. His Parents were James and Emma Green of East St. Wivenhoe.
The Essex County Standard reported: A pretty wedding was solemnised on May 19 in the Congregational Church, Greenhithe, the ceremony being conducted by the Rev. Stanley Morgan. The bride was Miss Dora Wilson (third daughter of Mr. J.S. Wilson, Marsh Cottage, Greenhithe), and the bridegroom Mr James S. Green, P.O. of H.M.S. “King Edward VII.” And son of Mr. and Mrs. James Green, of East Street, Wivenhoe……The bridegroom…is a teetotaller, as also are his two brothers, who with their father are all serving the country in the present crisis.
Tragically he was lost overboard of H.M.S. Tintagel at Invergorden on the 26th January 1919, and his body was never recovered. He left his widow Mrs Doris Green, and a daughter, Dora E. I. Green who died in 1934.

Edwin Green and James were brothers. He was one of 8 boys and one girl who drowned when she was 3. Edwin Green’s son was Wivenhoe’s only Spitfire Pilot, killed in 1943. My grandad, Peter Ronald Green is his nephew and still living in Wivenhoe.
Is this Mr James Green a relation of Mr Eden Green also of East St fish shop who was my grandad. My mum was Marjorie green .
Dear Mary
I am not certain. I will consult with one of my colleagues who know far more about the Green family than I do.
I will get back to you.
Peter
