Cycling was popular activity and the Wivenhoe Cycling Club was already several years old when the 20^th Century began.  The bicycle was an important mode of transport as well as being sports equipment, a motor vehicle would have been a rarity, although the Barlow family are known to have possessed a motorbicycle.
