The History and Antiquities of the most ancient Town and Borough of Colchester in the County of Essex
Title Page

Written by Philip Morant, Rector at St. Mary-at-the-Walls.  Prior to this there was no history of the town. He researched the Town Charters, the Court Rolls, the Chamberlain’s Accounts, the Oath Book and the Red Paper Book.

This scholarly book (originally produced in three parts) is an invaluable background resource for any one who is interested in the history of Colchester from the earliest times to the mid-eighteenth century.  The original sources are listed and there are maps, family trees, plates and detailed Appendices. There are many references to key families who are referred to in the history of Wivenhoe: the Battailes; the Townshend’s; the Rebows; the Grays and the Rounds
