Philip Chamberlain was the father of Etta Dan (nee Chamberlain) who was a teacher at the Phillip Road School. His boot and shoe shop was located between The Greyhound P.H. and the shop on the corner of High Street and Phillip Road that was once Barton’s Stores and before that an off-licence and a general hardware shop run by Stacey Woods.

Philip Chamberlain had the shop front built onto the two cottages No 52 and 54 which stood one behind the other down a narrow alley between the houses fronting the High Street. He used to employ a couple of cobblers to make shoes and boots at the rear of the premises.

This shop front was later demolished in the 1970s to make way for a brick-built lobby. This house is now called Chamberlains.

An interview was conducted with Etta Dan nee Chamberlain about her early life growing up in Wivenhoe, living at this shop.  To read the transcript of this interview – click here
