The High Street 100 Years Trail

The History Group's Trail Day on Saturday 15th September 2018

On Saturday 15th September, come and follow a Trail from the top of the High Street, or from the bottom up to the top. Members of the History Group will be positioned in gazebos in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church and in the garden of the Folly at the top of the High Street, opposite the Headfirst hairdressing salon.

We will be handing out leaflets from these two locations which will highlight the buildings that have been researched, the details of which you will be able to see here on the Wivenhoe History Group’s web site. A lot of extra pages about the properties in the High Street will go live on our web site on the 15th September especially for this event. They will continue to be there after the event.

If you have a smart phone you will be able to easily access the relevant web page via a QR code, or you can look it up if you bring a tablet or a laptop with you.

As you follow the Trail, you will see copies of old photographs from John Stewart’s Wivenhoe Memories Collection. There is also a quiz for children to join in with too. We want this to be a family day.

This Trail Day will be running throughout the day from 10am to 4pm. For those people who cannot come that day, the leaflet will be available to download on the History Group web site after 15th September; all of the photographs of the High Street 100 years ago will also be there with the history of these properties all written up. They will of course be a permanent reminder of what the High Street used to look like.

Note: Gill Strudwick and Helen Polom have been leading a team of people from the Wivenhoe History Group who have been researching the significant buildings in the High Street 100 years ago.  Many are still there of course but some like the National School have been replaced by the Library, and all that remains of the Hall is the Folly and that part of the wall at the top of the High Street. The road to the Hall would have started in front of the gatehouse building where Wivenhoe Garage, once Cedric’s Garage, now stands.
