The Evening Telegraph, dated Thursday, January 26, 1938, in a short article about general flooding in Essex and Suffolk refers to: ‘Wivenhoe Brook at Wivenhoe, Essex, overflowed its banks, flooded the roads, and put out the fires under the retorts at the Wivenhoe gas works . The whole works are under three feet of water.’
