On 28th February 2024, the Wivenhoe Branch of the Royal British Legion were able to honour Jeannie Coverley and Pat Smith for 100 years of helping to raise money every November between them at the RBL Annual Appeal.

Victoria Carrick, Poppy Appeal Organiser for the branch said: “These two wonderful ladies have been Poppy Appeal volunteers for a total of 100 years between them. Jeannie Coverley for 60 years and Pat Smith 40 years, and they received their long term medals and certificates last night”.

Victoria, who took over the role of Poppy Appeal Organiser from her father Martyn Carrick when he sadly passed away in 2019, has known these two ladies for a very long time. Martyn was Poppy Appeal Organiser for at least 20 years before her.  Victoria contacted RBL Head Office to get Pat & Jeannie’s long service registered.

In addition to helping with annual Poppy Appeal collections, these two ladies have run a weekly raffle each Wednesday evening at the Legion’s members’ social evening to raise money for different RBL worthy causes. They have been doing this for as long as anyone can remember.  In the past, their Pate ‘n Plonk evenings were memorable for the quality and quantity of food they produced. These evenings always sold out and raised subtstantial monies for RBL funds.
