Next WHG Meeting - An Evening with the Greens - Thursday 13th February 2020

 

Our special guest to this meeting are Ken & Peter Green, both of whom are well known to those who have lived here for some time. They of course were both born in Wivenhoe. We are very pleased that they were both happy to come and talk to us about their memories of the Green family and other fishermen on the River Colne.

Their grandfather was ‘Friday’ Green who lived in Alma Street. (I’m sure Ken will tell us why he was always called Friday). Ken & Peter grew up in Paget Road with 2 other brothers, all of whom followed their father and grandfather into the fishing industry. Peter eventually opened his own fish shop in Eld lane in Colchester whilst Ken became a well-known figure around Wivenhoe with his fish shop and store in West Street.  In 1979 Ken was awarded the MBE for services to the fishing industry.

I’m sure this will be fascinating evening, with many pictures of old Wivenhoe and to do with the River.

Non-members are welcome as well as members of course. Admission £3 at the door towards the costs of running the History Group and this website.
