In 2011 there were just 6 hotels in Colchester. Since then there have been an additional 7 new hotels in Colchester which gives 67,500 extra annual room nights from 185 additional bedrooms. It sems that they were all achieving reasonable occupancy, at least before the Coronavirus pandemic.

David McCaskey and Karen Turnbull jointly authored an article entitled Colchester on a Roil which was published by Hospitality Review in October 2011 – see below.

When this article was written, the aspiration was for four new hotels; since then there have been six new hotels and three major refurbs (Greyfriars, Premier Inn in St Peter’s St, Star Anglia, St Nicholas Hotel, Blue Ivy Hotel, Holiday Inn Express). The refurbs have been: at The George and Wivenhoe House and North Hill Hotel.

So significant market growth converting day tripping into overnights – stay longer and spend more!
