Lance-Corporal Charles H. WOODWARD, 2nd Bn Norfolk Regiment, survived

Charles H. Woodward was born about 1889 in Wivenhoe, third of four sons of Charles Wright, Mariner, and Angyl.  Although not stated he was presumably a ‘Scholar’ Iiving at Roberts Place, Ernest Road (a terrace on right between Co-op and Stanley Road junction) in 1901 Census.

He joined the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment as a regular soldier in about 1903, and subsequently was promoted Lance-Corporal.

ECS 14/4/1917  Reported that he was recently awarded, at the age of 24, the D.C.M. for conspicuous bravery in the field at Mesopotamia.  Now in hospital at Belgaum, India, suffering from an attack of enteric fever.

ECS 13/11/15 Reported that he has seen twelve years’ service; has been wounded in the jaw in Mesopotamia; and is now in hospital.
