Thomas Smee Beckwith was born in 1894 in the High Street, son of Asa (Dairyman) & Julia Emma Lewsey.   He presumably worked in the family business as an Assistant Dairyman.

He enlisted in Colchester as 30370 Private in the 8th Bn. Essex Regiment, later transferring to the 1st Bn of the Essex Regiment.

In the Essex County Standard of 16 December 1916 it was reported that he had been badly wounded and was in hospital.  He died of wounds at No 11 Sta. Hospital, Rouen  on 28 December 1916, aged 23, and was buried St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Grave ref: O-!V-C-8.

He is named on the Wivenhoe War Memorial.
