Wivenhoe's Roll of Honour - First World War 1914 - 1918

This list of over 300 people from Wivenhoe who served in WW1 was compiled by Ian Valentine in 2016

This Roll of Honour contains more than 300 names of those people from Wivenhoe who served our country in the first World War.roll-of-honour-title-page

it was Colonel T. Gibbons who unveiled the War Memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard on 21st June 1921 to commemorate those people from Wivenhoe who lost their lives in the War. He is reported as saying that ‘the Cross would be a permanent memorial of the patriotism and public spirit which had sent over 400 men to the Colours.’  This became the motivation for Ian Valentine to compile this list of names which has involved lots of painstaking research in local newspapers, the Essex Records Office, National Archives and the Essex Regimental Museum.

Where a name in the list below has been highlighted, clicking on that name takes you to additional information that we have about that person.  We have researched all the information we have been able to find information about the 46 people whose names are inscribed on Wivenhoe’s War Memorial together with details of the other 24 people who died and who were not named on the War Memorial.

We welcome additional information about the people named in this list and we will add names where we have been unable to find them in our research.

Ian’s list of names as at April 2016 was the basis of the Roll of Honour that we published as a special book in November 2016 and presented at the Annual Service of Remembrance where it was Dedicated and Blessed by the Rev. Erwin Lammens.  This book is now going to be kept on display in the British Legion Hall, whilst copies are available to see in various places in Wivenhoe including at St Mary’s Church and in the Wivenhoe Town Council offices. Comments about this page

  • Phillip James Pascoe’s inclusion on the Roll of Honour may be because boys began learning and working on family boats when very young starting in-harbour, then in-shore and by 12 or so might assist on longer trips. As the boats were used as part of the Naval Reserve in WW1, I’m guessing he was listed as a member of the crew, at least from around 1916. He was my first husband’s uncle.

  • Hello Lizzie.
Nice to hear from you. All we know about this man is that he served in the Roal Naval Reserve.

  • The inclusion of Philip James Pascoe is interesting, if correct he would almost certainly be the youngest to serve; still only 14 years 1 month & 3 days old at the Armistice. The suspicion must be that his service commenced after the war, as was the case with Wilfred Gordon Simpson. That said many under age boys did serve, the youngest that can be verified from Wivenhoe appears to be Bertie William Thomas Joseph Blyth, born 3 Dec 1901 who was only 14 years 6 months & 21 days old when he enlisted in June 1916.
A number of the other names included here appear to have been from places other than Wivenhoe or else didn’t serve during WWI:

Frederick Joseph Cutts Avis. Born 28 Jun 1897, West Mersea, baptized there 10 Jun 1900. Living in West Mersea at the time of the 1901 & 1911 Census. Killed by a mine explosion, North Sea 17 Oct 1917, HM Trawler “Strymon”. Commemorated on the West Mersea War Memorial.
