The people of Wivenhoe supported the Boer War with enthusiasm and the relief of Mafeking was hailed with total enthusiasm. Forrestt’s shipyard downed tools and the workers wandered round the town singing and drinking. Cannons fired, church bells rang, flags were hoisted everywhere, ships were dressed in flags and in the evening a torchlight procession with a firework display took place.
