Benjamin Stacey

Warehouse on the Quay

John Stewart

Wivenhoe Memories Collection

This building has always been known as The Granary, but in fact it was a brick 4-storey warehouse built by Benjamin Stacey in the late 1700s.

In his will, he mentions it was next door to his dwelling house on the Quay,  so he probably lived in Quay House.

  • I believe the granary and adjoining house may have been built by Daniel Stacey, Benjamin’s brother. Daniel was the Captain of the revenue cutter Repulse.
