George Wyatt was born about 1712, and is recorded a being a shipbuilder in 1756. He died on 10/2/1776 and is buried in Wivenhoe churchyard.
From his tomb, it can be inferred that his was a successful business, but he may well have had other business interests besides shipbuilding. There can be little doubt that he operated from the upriver shipyard that in the course of time has become the Wivenhoe Port Estate.
Among other vessels, George Wyatt probably built the Industry an 86 ton sloop with a pink stern, completed in 1757. She was owned in Colchester until 1798 when she was sold to Sunderland owners. She was probably in the coal trade.
