A teacher called Lily Husk

Wivenhoe Schools

John Stewart

She was accepted as there is a picture of her with the other teachers, including her elder sister Elsie, on p59 of the Dick Barton book ‘Wivenhoe its attractions, pleasures and eccentric natives.’

She went to become an assistant mistress at the boy’s school in 1905 and was registered as a certified teacher in 1918. She died in Colchester in 1969.

  • In the summer of 1945 I was due to take my School certificate exams at Colchester Royal Grammar School. Unfortunately, due to illness, I could not attend school so it was arranged that I could sit the exams at Miss Lily Husk’s and Mr. Wadley’s houses on alternate days. Mr. Wadley had been the Senior Master at the Boys School, where the Wivenhoe Library now stands, I was possibly the only child to sit School Cert. having been provided with a glass of orange and a biscuit by the invigilators !!!
