The Wivenhoe Rowhedge Toll Ferry

On Ferry Road, now part of the Wivenhoe Port estate

I used to go through the tollgate on foot on my way to school in Wivenhoe when we lived on a houseboat – The Gay Viking – in Rowhedge. We were planning to move to Wivenhoe which is why I started school there.

I had to catch the ferry over the river at one penny a crossing. I think I did that for about two months when I was six. Can’t imagine a six year old doing that now!

Note:  Because the Wivenhoe doctors used to look after people in Rowhedge, they were allowed free passage on the ferry.
