These are the notes made by Nicholas Butler who interviewed Mr P McEune of Anastasis 6 Newstead Road, Great Wakering in the mid 1980s as part of the research for his book “The Story of Wivenhoe”. These notes have been re-typed by Ann Jones from Nicholas Butler’s original notes and posted here by Frances Belsham.
About Mr McEune
I was formerly a member of the Monumental Brass Council, which has premises at Burlington House, Wivenhoe. Wivenhoe originally had thirteen brasses, but three today are represented only by indents.
You should contact the Essex Record Office about this matter.
There is a book called Essex Church Chests, price £40 (I saw a copy in a second-hand booksellers). The chest at Wivenhoe once contained a fragment of a vestment which may have been worn by Thomas Wesley. It is now in the British Museum.
