The Old Rookery
Wivenhoe Memories

Wivenhoe Council demolished the old Rookery in the 1930s in an attempt to clear away some of the old ‘slums’. Houses in Brook Street now stand on part of this site. The people who lived there were mostly mariners and included Edward Bacon, James Oakley, Benjamin Oakley and William Gunn.

  • Interesting, but are sure about no. 11 as I live there and it was built in the 1890s?

  • Thank you for your comment. I’ve amended the text slightly to take this on board.
