In July 1976, after a period of heavy rainfall the inadequately piped Brook, which runs beneath the various housing developments built over it in the sixties and seventies, burst through the downstairs rooms of No 36 and 38 Valley Rd releasing torrents of water on to the streets. One of the photos was taken from the back garden of No 25 Valley Road where I lived at the time.

The photos also give you an impression of the amount of water contained in the Brook which still runs down the eastern side of the town from Wivenhoe Heath, down under the estates, briefly emerging in the dip of Queens Road, and then flowing onward, under the railway line and out to the marshes.
