The weather was kind to all the many guests who came to Wivenhoe’s Annual Civic Service in 2008 led by Wivenhoe Town Mayor Cllr Frances Richards, accompanied by her husband Peter.

There was a wonderful turnout of official guests as well as many of the people in Wivenhoe who help to run so many activities here. Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant of Essex, came as he invariably does; this year’s High Sheriff of Essex, Sarah Courage was there; Colchester Mayor Margaret Fairley Crowe attended and with so many other Mayors and Council Chairmen from around the Colchester area. The Garrison was represented too by the presence of Colonel Tony Phillips, Deputy Commander of the Garrison. Our MP, Bernard Jenkin together with his wife Ann were there too, as usual.

Rev David Thomas, led the service in St Mary’s Church on the theme of ‘Joy’, the theme chosen by our Mayor Cllr Frances Richards and to which Director of Music, Graham Wadley, the organist John Dowden and the choir all rose to the occasion with beautiful music and hymns which were much appreciated by everybody in the Church.  A collection was taken in support of the Mayor’s Charity Fund and the Wivenhoe Branch of the British Legion in support of their Premises Fund.

Suitably uplifted, all the guests filed to the William Loveless Hall for refreshments, where the Quay Quilters had arranged a display of some quilts made by their members.
