Notes of Interest - Wivenhoe 1923 - 1929

These notes were recorded by Nick Butler when researching for his book the Story of Wivenhoe which was first published in 1989

1923 vol.ncs111.   page 5.  Suley squire cycle manufacturing Company had the workshops in West Street building cycles.

1923  page 6. 15th century font found in the churchyard at Wivenhoe has been replaced in the church on a stone base.  The present font has been presented to a church in a poor district.

1924 page 8. Wivenhoe Urban Council applied to Colchester Council to see if they could supply Wivenhoe with electricity, Wivenhoe had its own supply company that was called the Wivenhoe Electricity Company at Wivenhoe Cross then belonging to Barrell.

1925 page 9. Rennie Forrestt staff social club: A.G.M. A Garrett chairman decided to alter the name to the Colne Social Club.

1925 page 10 Wivenhoe shipyard to reopen.  Mr Otto Anderson of Bergen, Norway.is to take the yard.

!925, Page 10 Carolin Memorial gates in East Street dedicated after morning service, the ground was given by W.M.Fison, Church Warden. The church gates were made by Mr.F.W.Smith a member of the congregation.

1925, page 11. Liquidation of the Wivenhoe Leather Company Ltd. in 1922, the company bought premises on the quay at Wivenhoe.  In 1924 the company removed to Guildford, Surrey.

1925  page 11 The steam yacht Rosabelle is back in Wivenhoe for its winter lay up down the sea wall.

1926, page 15.  The Garrison House, built in 1676, the date being found carved on one of its main beams.  Originally this was a mansion house of some importance with grounds that extended down to the river.  It is said to have belonged to a Captain Ord of the East India Company.

1927 page 19 Wivenhoe Hall is demolished by Bravery and Funnell of Seaford, Devon.

1928 page 21.  Mrs Mitchel who has been caretaker – operator of the Wivenhoe telephone exchange for the past 19 years is retiring at the end of this week.  Mrs Mitchel was the first telephone operator under the National Telephone Company, when the exchange opened at Wivenhoe in February 1919.

1929 page 23 Arrangements are being made to open a Wivenhoe branch County library at the old boys school in the High Street.

Ribbans the Butcher is established in East Street in this year.

1929 page 24, Electric lighting.  The switch over of electric lighting of the town from the Colchester station took place on Thursday evening the 6th of April.
