The Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea Railway was the brainchild of Yorkshire entrepreneurs, who, having purchased the local Lordship of the Manor of Brightlingsea, wished to attract trade to the area. Once built, the five mile branch fully justified the optimism showed by the promoters, being fully utilised by the oyster and sprat traffic. Later yachting developed, the population increased and the small town increased into a self contained resort within easy reach of Colchester and London.
The book covers: the advent of the railway; its construction; its opening and discord; independence and consolidation; Great Eastern operation; L.N.E.R. Control; nationalisation and flooding; rundown and closure; the route described; permanent way signalling and staff; timetables and traffic; locomotives and rolling stock; with appendices on level crossings, bridges, and structural drawings.
