Landlords at the Park Hotel
Daniel Southgate, Joseph Harlow and Wm Dines
Mary Norris
Daniel Southgate, was landlord of the Park Hotel between 1872 and 1880, and Joseph Harlow from 1900 until his death in 1907 when his daughter took over the licence.
Joseph Abraham Harlow was a master mariner working as a yacht master from at least 1882 onwards, and almost certainly a lot earlier. He was engaged to run an American yacht for several seasons starting in 1882 and travelled out to New York with his crew at the start of each season. Within Wivenhoe he was heavily involved in the the annual captains teas, the Colne oyster fishery and the local Tory party.
From 1900 he held the licence for the Park Hotel until his death, aged just 63, in 1907. He was listed as living at the Park Hotel on the 1901 census. His wife was Sarah Ann Barr, the daughter of William Barr and Sarah Pittuck. Their daughter Sarah Ann married William Witten Dines at St Mary’s Wivenhoe in 1896. They lived on Beaconsfield Road and then Constantine Road in Colchester but ran the Park Hotel after Joseph’s death.
It may be a coincidence that Daniel Southgate, who ran the Park Hotel from 1872 – 1880, was Joseph’s sister Emily’s father-in-law. He went on to run the Horse and Groom from 1881. (see the notes on the Live and Let Live)
