The Renovation of Tilf Glozier's Barbershop Chair
Glozier's were the barbers in Wivenhoe from 1902 until the 1970s
Peter Hill
Around 1902, Tilford Henry Glozier opened a barbershop at 61 High Street with his wife Maggie. Later, their son, also called Tilford but generally called Tilf, took over the business. The business had expanded since its early beginnings to also selling tobacco and tobacco products as well as cutting ladies hair in styles fashionable at the time.
Tilf Glozier died in 1979 and his son Mick Glozier inherited his father’s barbershop chair. He had attempted to restore it himself during the years that followed. In 2019 he took it to The Repair Shop where an expert restored if for him.
This was all captured in the popular television series made by the BBC – see this episode: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00085bb/the-repair-shop-60-min-versions-episode-24
