In the Name of God Amen I Thomas Hines late of Wivenhoe
In the County of Essex but now of Harwich in the County aforesaid Cordwainer, being
weak of Body but of a sound and disposing mind and memory (praised be Almighty
God) and considering the certainty of Death and the uncertainty of the timew thereof
Do therefore this seventeenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand
Seven hundred and forty five, Make and declare this my Last Will and Testament in
In manner and form following, that is to say, First and principally I commend my Soul
Into the hands of Almighty God who gave it me, believing the remission of sins and
Everlasting Life through the merits and mediation of our Ever-blessed Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ, and my body to be Buryed in a Decent and Christian like manner, at
the Discretion of my Executrix and Executor herein after named, in hopes of a joyful Resur-
rection:  And as for that Wordly Estate wherewith it hath and shall and shall please, God to bless
me I dispose thereof as follows  Imprimus I Will that that my just Debts and
Funerall Expenses be paid and Satisfied.  Also I give Devise and bequeath All
that my Customary Messuage or Tenement with all and Singular the Appurtenances
thereto belonging scituate in Wivenhoe Street aforesaid, and also all that Kitchen or
lean to, and yard at the West end of the said Messuage or Tenement, together with a
right of a passage to and from the same, unto my loving wife Mary and to her heirs
and Assigns for ever:  Also I give and bequeath unto my Kinswoman Anne Hall
Daughter of John Hall late of Dunnyland in the said County of Essex Fisherman De-
-ceased, the Sum of Fifty pounds to be put out at Interest for her three Months after
my Decease by my Executrix and Executor herein after appointed until she shall come
of Age or be Married then the said Money and Interest to be at her own Disposal
Also – I give and bequeath unto my brother Roger Hines the Sum of Twenty pounds
To be paid to him in manner following, that is to say, Ten pounds part thereof to
be laid out by my Executrix and Executor in a Month after my Decease for such Stock
in his Trade of a Cordwainer as he and they shall judge proper and fit for his use, and
the other or remaining ten pounds to be laid out for Stock in Trade as aforesaid for him
within one Month after that, or two months after my Decease, but in case I shall live
and should at any time hereafter leave my Stock in Trade to my said Brother to fix him in
business then it is my Will that my Executrix shall be wholly Cleared and exempted from the
payment of the above Legacy of twenty pounds.  And it is my Will that in case either or both my
said Legatees aforementioned shall Die before the time of the payment of any or either or both my
Legacies that then the same at such time unpaid shall devolve and go to my said wife Mary.  And
Lastly  – I do hereby make Constitute and appoint my said loving wife Mary Executrix together
with my friend Edward Smith of Harwich Sawyer Executor, of this my last Will and testament
and bequeath Mr Smith a Guinea for a Ring:  and do hereby revoke all other or former Wills and Testament
and bequests whatsoever by me made;  And further I do hereby give Devise and bequeath unto my
said loving Wife Mary all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Estate.Goods Chattells and Credits
whatsoever over and above what is herein particularly disposed of.  In Witness whereof I the said
Thomas Hines have to this my Last Will and Testament Set my hand and Seal the day and Year above written.
