In the Name of God Amen
I John Gill of Wivenhoe Parsonage in the County
of Essex Yeoman being of sound Mind Memory
and understanding do make and ordain this my
last Will and Testament In manner and form as
follows First and principally I commend my Soul
into the Hands of Almighty God and my Body
to the Earth to be there decently buried at the  

Discretion of my Executors hereinafter mentioned
and as to the Temporal Effects I give and bequeath
them in the following manner Item I give unto
my Godson John Gill Barker Son of my Niece Mary
Gill now Wife of William Barker of Harwich in the
said county Fisherman five pounds of lawfull British
Money as also my Watch and all my Silver Buckles
and Buttons Item I give to Mary Applebee
Daughter of Hannah Gill my Niece now Wife
of James Applebee of Thorpe in the said county
Perukemaker the like Sum of five pounds Item I
give to my Godson George Inglish son of Mary
Gill now wife to George Inglish of Weeks Abbey
In the said County Farmer the like sum of five
pounds Item I give to Elizabeth Frome Daughter
of John Frome of London the like Sum of five
pounds Item I give to my Cousin Hannah Applebee
the like Sum of Five Pounds to be paid her
after my Sisters decease Item I give to my
Cousin Mary Inglish the like Sum of five pounds
to be paid her after my Sister’s decease Item I give
to Catherine Le Mead of London for favours shown
my Family one Guinea Item I give to my
Cousin Mary the wife of Thomas ?minster
one Guinea Item I give to my Cousin Hannah
the wife of Joseph Denny one
Guinea Item I give to my Cousin Ann Pertwee
of London my Silver Snuff Box Item I give
to Ann Pertwee now wife of John Pertwee of
Fingringhoe in the said County my Mourning
Ring Item I give to John Pertwee of
Fingringhoe aforesaid one of my Executors
the Sum of ten pounds as a recompence
for his trouble in settling the conditions of this my
Will after my sisters decease Item I give to my
Nephew John Gill my other Executor my great
Box all my wearing apparel and case of Razors
and Bazon? And I will order and direct that after my
decease my executors do immediately consult and
aggree with Mr Charles Teissier of Austin Friars London
Gentlemen who acts under an Agency for me for them
to advise with him to sell and dispose of one or more
hundred pounds if necessary out of my five hundred
pounds placed in the Bank of England At three
per cent reduced to reimburse the said Mr Charles
Teissier the sum he has been so very kind as to advance
me As extraordinary when we were in want and
likewise to pay off the aforesaid small Legacies
&c except to time to which some are excepted
and likewise to discharge all my lawfull and just Debts
and as to the remainder of my personal Estate I
give and dispose of as follows I give unto my loving
sister Susannah Gill all the Interest money arising from  

From the Principal that may be left and remaining
in the said three per cent reduced stock of the
Bank of England aforesaid after the aforementioned
Legacies &c are discharged and paid off Also all and
singular my household Furniture of every kind
And further if the said Interest Money should not
be sufficient to support her then I will order
and direct my Executors to advise with the
aforesaid Mr Chas Teissier and to sell and
dispose of such a part of the Said three per cent
reduced Bank Stock as she may from time
to time want or stand in need of during her life
and after her decease the remainder of such said
Stock to be sold and disposed of to the best
advantage and to be fairly and equally divided
into four parts or equal portions amongst the
following four Relations viz: I give to my
nephew John Gill one full and equal share And if
he should die I give the same to his daughter
Mary Gill now living with Mr Sanford at Layer
Tower in the said County I give to my niece
Hannah Gill Widow of Daniel Gaileat alike
full and equal share and if she should die before
the time of payment then I give her share to
my niece Hannah Gill Wife of James Applebee
of Thorpe aforesaid and if she should die before
the day of payment I order and direct the same
to be paid to her children share and share alike
I give to my Niece Judith Gill now Wife of
John Joillife a like full and equal share for her
own proper use without the interference of her
said Husband in my shape whatever and if
she should die before the time of payment then I
give the same to Mary Gill now wife of William
Barker of Harwich aforesaid and if she should
die I give the same to her son Jno Gill Barker
I give to the Said Mary Gill wife of the said
William Barker one full and equal share and if
she should die before the day of payment then I
give the same to her son John Gill Barker as
aforesaid And I do hereby nominate constitute
and appoint my Nephew John Gill and my Cousin
John Pertwee joint Executors of this my Will
in trust for the purposes aforementioned and I
rely upon their honesty in seeing the same faithfully
discharged according to the true intent and
meaning hereof and I do hereby revoke all other
and former Will or Wills by me before made
or caused to be made declaring this to be
my real and last Will and Testament and
which is wrote upon two sheets of common
unstamped Writing Paper And Signed and Sealed  

by me in my own Handwriting at the bottom of
each Sheet this tenth day of May in the year of our
Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty five
1785 John Gill Signed Sealed Published and
declared by the said Testator John Gill as and for
his last Will and Testament and we whose names
are hereunto subscribed as witnesses did see the Said
John Gill sign and seal with the same at his request and
in the presence of each other witnesses J A

This Will was proved at London on the
first day of December in the Year of our Lord one
thousand seven hundred and eighty six before the
Right Worshipfull Peter Calvert Doctor of Laws
Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative
Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of
John Gill the Nephew of the Deceased and John
Pertwee the Executors named in the said will to
whom administration would granted all and
singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the
said deceased having been first sworn by Com[missi]on
Duly to administer
