In the Name of God Amen
I Charles Bartwell of Wivenhoe in the County of Essex Farmer
being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding
thanks be to God for the same but calling to mind that it is
appointed for all men once to die and also the instability of
The Human Frame do make publish and declare this my last
Will and Testament in manner and form following First I
commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave
it hoping for a Remission of all my sins by the Merits and
Mediation of my savior Jesus Christ and my Body I commit
to the Earth to be decently buried at the Discretion of my
Administratrix hereinafter named And as to all my worldly
Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me I dispose
of in the following manner I Give and Bequeath unto my
beloved wife Elizabeth all and singular my Copyhold Estate
now in my own posession (of which I have made a surrender)
to her her Heirs and Assigns for ever subject nevertheless to
the payment of twenty pounds of good lawful Money
of Great Britain out of my aforesaid Copyhold Estate to John Ambrose the

Younger of Mistley in the said County of Essex to be paid
within six Months after my beloved wife’s Decease And I
hereby subject my said Copyhold Estate to the Payment
thereof and all the Rest Residue and Remainder whatsoever
or of what nature and kind soever Household Furniture
wearing apparel Monies that Interest in the Public Funds
or otherwise I Give unto my beloved Wife for her own
proper use and benefit and I appoint my good Friend John
Cannon of Abbington in the said County of Essex Executor
and my beloved Wife Administratrix of this my last Will
and Testament utterly revoking any Will or Wills by me
at any time heretofore made In Witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth Day of
September in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred
and eighty nine the mark of Charles Bartwell 
Signed and Sealed by the said Charles Bartwell in the
presence of us who at his request in his presence and in the
presence of each other have subscribed our names
as witnesses hereto Publishing and Declaring this to be his last
Will in Testament William Browne Susanna Browne
Joseph Lidwell

This Will was proved at London the thirty first Day
of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
and ninety five before the worshipful John Fisher Doctor
of laws Surrogate of the Right Honourable Sir William
Wynne Knight also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or
Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully
constituted by the oath of Elizabeth Bartwell widow the
Relict of the Deceased and one of the Executors named in
the said Will to whom Administration of all and singular
the Goods chattels and Credits of the said Deceased was granted
having been first warned duly to administer Power reserved
of making the like grant to John Cannon the other Executor
named in the said Will when he shall apply for the same.
